If a tree falls in the woods — and there’s no one around — does it make a sound? The answer to that age-old question will have to wait at least another week, because there will be almost 20,000 of us waiting to see the Loons fell the Timbers this Saturday, and I reckon it’s going to get a little loud. Unless, of course, we all agree to go silent at the very end of the match to see what sound they make after they lose. Just something to think about.
Minnesota United (3-2-2)
Run of Form: W-W-W-D-L (All competitions)
It’s been an exciting last few weeks for your Loons, as they’ve found a bit of a rhythm on the West Coast. Three straight wins in California (including a shootout win in USOC play) have enabled them to keep pace with the strong core of the Western Conference, with goals from Kelvin Yeboah and both wingbacks proving that the game plan works. With the dust settling on this new season and a string of positive results, MNUFC looks to be headed in the right direction ahead of this weekend’s showdown.
Portland Timbers (2-4-1)
Run of Form: W-L-D-L-L
The Timbers are, and have always been, a microcosm of Major League Soccer’s beloved parity. This season alone, they lost to a promising but struggling Houston side just a few weeks before they ended LAFC’s crazy defensive streak to become the first team to beat the fighting Will Ferrells in 2026. They could win — or lose — virtually any game, and that is one of the greatest compliments I can give them, truly. More than any team in this league, Portland is nearly impossible to predict. That means you’re going to have to tune in.
Keys to the Match:
From Little Seeds Grow Mighty Trees
Every rivalry starts with one game. In the case of MNUFC vs. Portland, that first game was also the Loons’ first-ever game in MLS play, a 5-1 road loss at Providence Park. Since then, these sides have faced one another 17 more times in the regular season and given me so many fun stats to throw at you right now. While no one would call these two heated rivals, the competitive nature of this matchup is undeniable. This fixture produces an average of over three goals per game, with a combined total of 61 goals scored in 18 meetings. Your Loons have hit the back of the net 32 times to earn 9 wins, while the Timbers have scored 29 to earn five wins of their own. The remaining four games were draws, including the only scoreless meeting in 2019 and that 4-4 thriller back in 2022. Sure, this may not be the rivalry at the top of either club’s list, but it’s turned into one of the league’s most consistently thrilling affairs.
Can’t See the Forest for the Trees
In seven games played, the Timbers have scored 11 goals — from nine different players. Not only that, they’ve also had 12 different players credited with assists this season, truly spreading the attacking production and taking the idea of “teamwork makes the dream work” to a delightful level. If an opposing coach is trying to pinpoint Portland’s most dangerous player, they’ll inevitably get caught up looking at all the trees and miss the cohesive forest bearing down on them. So, how do you handle such an effective unit? Well, it might be as simple as being patient and then going through them. Phil Neville’s side currently has a -5 goal difference, having conceded 16 goals in 2026, showing that while they’re capable on the ball, they’re a bit slow off it. If the Loons can continue to build on the increasingly fluid passing and movement that has defined their recent surge, they should be able to leave Portland’s defense rooted to the spot. The passing range of Joaquín Pereyra, Tomás Chancalay, and Owen Gene might be the key to success in what could very well turn out to be a real barn-burner.
Never Out of the Woods
Your Loons are on a (checks over each shoulder) three-game unbeaten streak in MLS play. Five of their first seven matches in 2026 have been on the road, and when you’re as isolated as Minnesota is, that means a lot of travel miles. Alas, the long road stretch is coming to a close, the style of play is coming together, and spring seems to be settling on the North Star State. Everything’s coming up Black and Blue — but that can be dangerous. The Western Conference has proven to be stronger than normal this season, and taking your foot off the gas for even a moment could be the difference between making or missing the playoffs. This weekend’s home match could very easily turn into a trap game if the mentality isn’t right, so how can we avoid tripping? Keep the nose to the grindstone. Since taking over, Coach Knowles has emphasized the importance of constant evolution, and that principle guides more than just what happens on the pitch — it motivates the players. When there’s intention, precision, and a larger goal to shoot for at all times, complacency doesn’t have room to creep in. No matter what form they’re in or what circumstances surround any game, the Black and Blue need to remain vigilant, and a continuous evolution of their tactical approach is a fantastic way to keep the players engaged and striving towards better and better performances.
