Not lions, nor bears, but the other fearsome beast from the old Wizard of Oz song: Tigers. Or Tigres, to be perfectly specific. Your Loons are gearing up for game two of their Leagues Cup Phase One journey, and it’s not getting any easier in this interleague extravaganza. A narrow loss to FC Juárez left the Black and Blue with plenty of work to do if they want to advance to the knockouts, making this Friday’s showdown an even bigger event than it already was.
Tigres UANL
We know the Loons; but what about our next opponents? Tigres UANL stand out as one of Liga MX’s most recognizable clubs, but they’ve started the Apertura season a bit behind the eight ball. A pair of losses and a draw in their first three games of the current season have seen Los Tigres fall below their usual standards, and a draw against Real Salt Lake in their Leagues Cup opener saw that form continue in many ways. Sure, they won the ensuing shootout to get two points instead of one, but this mighty club from Monterrey is never satisfied with anything less than their best. There are plenty of difference makers on this roster, and with a frustrating run preceding this match, they’ll all be champing at the bit to turn things around.

What Are We Playing For?
The title of this key may be a bit deceptive; stay with me. Since last year’s format change, advancing in Leagues Cup has become incredibly difficult. Teams are competing against opponents that they have no opportunity to play against, meaning that in theory, you could win all three of your games and still fail to reach the knockouts. Now, that didn’t happen last year, but the possibility remains in 2026. The Loons could very possibly be eliminated simply by a single result, even if they steamroll Tigres and Atlante after that. So, the question leveled at Head Coach Cameron Knowles and the boys right now is a “simple” one: What are we playing for? If it’s to advance in this tournament, then I’d expect to see some desperation and frustration creep in. If it’s to find form and build a sustainable style against quality opposition, then I’d say that this Friday’s game is an excellent opportunity for tremendous growth. The remainder of this tournament will be a test of desire for your Loons, and it could be a serious indicator of how the rest of the MLS season could play out. Even if they don’t manage to advance from Phase One, there’s no time like the present to find a winning formula against seriously talented opposition. It’s not a friendly, after all.
Legends Live Everywhere
If you’ve watched USA vs. Mexico games across the United States — or been to any Leagues Cup games at Allianz Field — you’ll know just how widespread and passionate Liga MX fanbases are. Tigres are no exception to this rule, and even though Allianz Field is Minnesota United’s home turf, there will undoubtedly be a strong showing from Los Auriazules on Friday. It’s a bit odd when a game in your home stadium begins to feel like an away match, but it’s a feeling the Loons may very well have to deal with if they don’t get a hold on this one early. Stars like Rodrigo Aguirre up top and midfielder Juan Brunetta give this side some serious threats going forward, and after scoring in the sixth minute against RSL, Tigres have already shown that they’ll be ready to pounce from the very first whistle. It’s easy to say that scoring early would make winning a little easier, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the best script here. A back-and-forth game favors the Tigers, and their fans would love that. Keeping the game quiet for as long as possible may serve the Loons better in this particular matchup. They obviously need to score when the opportunity presents itself, but I think smart game management should trump urgency in this one. Pack it in, take what’s given, and be patient: cracks will open up.
So Many Faces!
Not only did last match see Carlos Harvey step into the starting midfield, but Devin Padelford and Mamadou Dieng also earned starts. Mauricio González, Marcus Caldeira, and Dominik Fitz came off the bench as well, adding to the fresh faces. Coach Knowles didn’t change things dramatically for Leagues Cup, but he certainly used it as an opportunity to get a few players valuable minutes in a high-pressure, tournament environment. Harvey, González, Caldeira, and Fitz have all played less than 150 minutes in league play this year, with Caldeira and Fitz registering just seven minutes apiece in MLS action. Though the result didn’t fall their way, the strides gained in match fitness and experience will benefit the squad going forward, making this a more well-rounded team and increasing the competition for spots all around. There’s no reason to expect this rotation experimentation to change against Tigres, so get ready to see some hungry players fighting for more playing time.
