What MNUFC STMs Need to Know About the MLS Schedule Change
What MNUFC STMs Need to Know About the MLS Schedule Change

2027 is going to be a monumental year in the history of Major League Soccer and Minnesota United. Beginning in 2027, MLS will be transitioning to a summer-to-spring competition calendar that aligns with the world’s top leagues. This is obviously a significant change, and as a Season Ticket Member, we imagine you have a number of questions about what this means for you.

If you haven’t already visited our general club MLS Schedule Change FAQ page, that's a great place to start. There we provide responses to many of the most common questions about this transition. Once you’ve had a chance to review that general information, we’d encourage you to read on for more specifics about how this will impact your membership.

What does this mean for my 2026 membership?

Absolutely nothing. Your 2026 membership is entirely unaffected.

What does this mean for my 2027 membership?

To accomodate the transition to the new summer-to-spring format, the 2027 calendar year will consist of a 14-game Sprint Season from February through May, followed by the 2027-2028 MLS Regular Season, which will include 34 regular-season games between July of 2027 and May of 2028 (with a two-month winter break in the middle).

Your 2027-2028 Season Ticket Membership will include a total of 25 games, 7 games as part of the Sprint Season, 17 games as part of the 2027-2028 MLS Regular Season, and one bonus MNUFC game. Your payment plan will be spread across 16 months, beginning in August of 2026 and ending in November of 2027. The extended format will be a one-time adjustment to align with the new MLS schedule.

2026 Comparison

How will you play home games at Allianz Field in the winter?

The number of MNUFC home games scheduled during the months of December, January, and February should remain the same as under the current format.

The entire league will take a roughly eight-week winter break from mid-December through mid-February. The league will also strategically align the schedule to minimize the number of home games played in cold-weather markets on either side of that break. We anticipate most seasons will see us play zero home games in December, zero home games in January, and one home game in late February, with all home games hosted at Allianz Field—the same as under our current schedule.

Additionally, clubs in cold-weather markets like ours will be permitted to schedule more afternoon kickoff times during the cold-weather months.

So we’re going to have fewer summer home games then?

This new schedule will certainly see us lose a few regular-season summer home games. In considering that, though, it’s important to also keep in context some of the current challenges we experience with summer home games. In both 2024 and 205, we were forced to play pivotal home games without key players who were away on international duty, sometimes for long stretches at a time (e.g., Copa America in 2024). In 2026, the entire league will break for nearly two months for the World Cup, leaving us without any home games at Allianz Field between May 23 and July 25.

That’s not to suggest that there’s no downside in losing some regular-season home games during the summer months. But in considering the tradeoffs, it's worth keeping in mind the challenges presented by the status quo, as well as the many long-term benefits associated with moving to a globally aligned competition calendar.

I still have several more questions.

That's completely understandable. As you can imagine, with a change of this significance, it will take some time for the league and other stakeholders to finalize all of the details.

While we don't have the answers to every single question at the moment, here a few things we can leave you with for now:

1. We think this is a net positive

As a club, we generally believe this is a positive change—for the league, for our club, for our fans, partners, and Season Ticket Members. That doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges along the way. But we think it’s a net positive, and we hope you do, too.

2. Our core values are unchanged

None of our core commitments as a club are in any way impacted by this change. We’re just as committed to winning a trophy as we ever have been. We’re just as committed to delivering an incredible fan experience at Allianz Field. We’re just as committed to providing a great value to our Season Ticket Members. And whether the season starts in February or July, we will always be committed to the core values that make us who we are.

3. We're happy to chat

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your service rep. They’re always happy to walk you through the details, explain what this means for your membership, and to listen to your feedback.

What do I do now?

For now, you can simply sit back and enjoy the 2026 season, while keeping an eye out for additional details we expect to be released over the coming months, as we prepare for what should be an exciting inflection point for Major League Soccer and Minnesota United.
