What MNUFC STMs Need to Know About the MLS Schedule Change

As you've likely seen, Major League Soccer recently announced plans to transition to a summer-to-spring competition calendar beginning with the 2027 season. This is obviously a significant change, and as a Season Ticket Member, we imagine you have a number of questions about what this means for you.

If you haven’t already visited our general club MLS Schedule Change FAQ page, that's a great place to start. There we provide responses to many of the most common questions about this transition. Once you’ve had a chance to review that general information, we’d encourage you to read on for more specifics about how this will impact your membership.

What does this mean for my 2026 membership?

Absolutely nothing. Your 2026 membership is entirely unaffected.

What does this mean for my 2027 membership?

This will impact your 2027 membership, of course. As you read on the general FAQ page, the 2027 calendar year will consist of an abbreviated 2027 season from February through May, followed by the 2027-2028 season, which will follow the new standard format of starting in July and ending in May.

How will you play home games at Allianz Field in the winter?

The number of MNUFC home games scheduled during the months of December, January, and February should remain the same as under the current format.

The entire league will take a roughly eight-week winter break from mid-December through mid-February. Additionally, the league will strategically align the schedule to minimize the number of home games played in cold-weather markets on either side of that break. We anticipate most seasons will see us play zero home games in December, zero home games in January, and one home game in late February, with all home games hosted at Allianz Field—the same as under our current schedule.

Additionally, we have emphasized to the league our desire for increased flexibility in start times, particularly during the cold-weather months, a request that the league has been very receptive to.

So we’re going to have fewer summer home games then?

This new schedule will certainly see us lose a few regular-season summer home games. In considering that, though, it’s important to also keep in context some of the current challenges we experience with summer home games. In 2024, we lost several key players for nearly two months to Copa America and other international tournaments. This past June, we were missing Dayne St. Clair during a pivotal June match against San Diego. In 2026, the entire league will break for nearly two months for the World Cup.

That’s not to suggest that there’s no downside in losing some regular-season home games during the summer months. But there are many additional benefits to consider alongside the weather implications. Additionally, this will open up new possibilities for the summer months, such as the team hosting preseason training locally.

I still have several more questions.

That's completely understandable. As you can imagine with a change of this significance, it will take some time for the league and other stakeholders to finalize all of the details.

While we don't have the answers to every single question at the moment, here a few things we can leave you with for now:

1. We think this is a net positive

As a club, we generally believe this is a positive change—for the league, for our club, for our fans, partners, and Season Ticket Members. That doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges along the way. But we think it’s a net positive, and we hope you do, too.

2. Our core values are unchaged

None of our core commitments as a club are in any way impacted by this change. We’re just as committed to winning a trophy as we ever have been. We’re just as committed to delivering an incredible fan experience at Allianz Field. We’re just as committed to providing a great value to our Season Ticket Members. And whether the season starts in February or July or the middle of December, we will always be committed to the core values that make us who we are.

3. We're happy to chat

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your service rep. They won’t necessarily have a bunch of additional information that isn’t listed in our public materials. But they’re always happy to talk, explain things in greater detail, and to listen to your feedback.

What do I do now?

Sit back, relax, enjoy the rest of the 2025 playoff run. Enjoy the entire 2026 season. And stay tuned for additional details to come out over the coming months, as we prepare for what should be a very exciting moment for Major League Soccer and Minnesota United.
