MNUFC Fall to Nashville in First Loss of 2026

Not every trip to Music City is met with celebratory tones, it seems. Minnesota United fell to Nashville SC tonight by a score of 3-1, their first loss of the 2026 MLS regular season. A relentless attacking surge from the hosts proved too much for the visiting Loons to handle, with the dagger final goal coming mere minutes into the second half to suck the air out of the match.

The only change to the Loons’ lineup on the night was Devin Padelford stepping in for the injured Michael Boxall. Other than that, the shape was similar to what we’ve come to expect, though Bongokuhle Hlongwane stayed even higher up the pitch than usual. An extremely aggressive press from the visitors opened the match in exciting fashion, with the Black and Blue looking the more likely team to find the back of the net early. Some dynamic ball-movement proved ultimately fruitless, however, and the hosts would soon wake up.

After finding their feet, Nashville began to apply pressure of their own, utilizing some silky passing sequences and incisive runs on and off the ball to move the opposition. This enabled them to spread the Loons out just enough to breathe, and when paired with a stifling presence when the visitors tried to play out of the back, it was no surprise when Nashville opened the scoring in the 26th minute. An intricate passing sequence ended in a backheel from Hany Mukhtar, a well-struck shot from the onrushing Patrick Yazbek, and the slightest of touches from striker Sam Surridge to put the hosts on top.

The Loons appeared to be a bit shell-shocked after the opener, rushing their counters and weathering more pressure from a resurgent Nashville side. In the 33rd minute, a Mukhtar shot from distance bounced awkwardly in front of Drake Callender, forcing a save and leaving the rebound in the path of Cristian Espinoza. This second goal put the Black and Blue in a bigger hole, but they didn’t stay down for long after this one.

Within two minutes of seeing the deficit doubled, Nectarios Triantis won the ball at midfield, drove forward with defenders all around him, and unleashed a venomous strike from 25 yards out. His attempt lasered its way into the upper left corner, pulling his team back into the match and giving himself yet another outstanding goal for his highlight reel. The Loons were able to get into the locker room down just a single goal, with the result very much up for grabs.

An unfortunate start to the second half saw Surridge grab his second goal of the night. After that, the game spread out, with both teams finding gaps to play with in the middle of the pitch. While the Loons were able to find some promising moments before the final whistle, the hosts maintained enough control to see out the result.

Aside from Triantis’ wonder-strike, the MNUFC debut of Kyle Duncan stood out as a highlight for the visitors, with the defender showing composure and sharpness after coming into the match at a tough time. The effort from the boys lasted 90 minutes, but some issues in execution and a few mistakes ended up costing the Loons enough to give them their first loss of the year.

Coach Knowles and the squad will look to bounce back next weekend in Vancouver, as they take on the Whitecaps in a second-consecutive road match. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT next Sunday.
