Your Loons earned their first point of the 2026 Leagues Cup campaign against Tigres UANL tonight, playing to a 0-0 draw before falling in the subsequent shootout. A back and forth match saw plenty of quality from the Black and Blue, but a frustrating night of finishing kept them from getting the three points they were hoping for.
Head Coach Cameron Knowles rolled the boys out in a 5-4-1 lineup, utilizing the attacking midfield duo of Joaquín Pereyra and Tomás Chancalay once again, rather than sticking with two strikers. The introduction of Bongokuhle Hlongwane to the starting lineup at right wingback, paired with Carlos Harvey’s start at right center back, gave the Loons a new dynamic on the right side, setting them up for a different style from the very start of the match.
Where the Loons were consistently compact and disciplined defensively, Tigres left far more space to play through, giving MNUFC plenty of opportunities on the counter. In the opening 20 minutes, Chancalay and Pereyra alternated between moments of static play and free-flowing movement, lulling the opponents into a false sense of security only to use a spark of creativity to unlock passing lanes and shift the defense. This led directly to the Loons’ first good chance of the match, when Mamadou Dieng got on the end of a cross in the 20th minute.
MNUFC’s compact shape seemed to really stump Tigres for the remainder of the half, who couldn’t seem to come up with many ideas beyond chipping the ball over the top and running onto it. Tigres winger Diego Lainez’s sticky feet made him frustrating to defend, helping his side retain possession, but his inability to consistently beat a man one on one kept him from really flexing his muscles down the Loons left flank.
The first-half action came to a head in the 39th minute when Joaquín Pereyra’s ball over the top found the run of Anthony Markanich, who was subsequently fouled in the box. After a VAR review confirmed that Markanich was both onside and fouled, Pereyra stepped up to take the penalty kick that was awarded. His effort clanged off the crossbar, sending the Loons into the locker room on another frustrating note.
The second half started with some pep in both teams’ steps, with Tigres putting together their best attacking sequences of the night within the first five minutes. That spurt was short-lived, though, as the Loons began to find more and more success down the right side, utilizing the movement of Harvey and Hlongwane to create space to work with.
Some smart defending from Morris Duggan and Michael Boxall kept the opposition from creating quality chances, but several near-misses and unfortunate bounces against the post at the other end left their efforts in vain, as the match ultimately ended 0-0 to split the points and prompt a shootout. Tigres keeper Nahuel Guzmán saved the first two MNUFC attempts, and his side went on to take a 4-2 win to secure their extra point.
Statistically speaking, it was a promising performance from the Loons, who generated 2.3 xG from 10 shots. Tigres, on the other hand, managed just 1.4 xG from 17 shots, meaning your Loons were more effective at creating quality chances. Unfortunately, their good play was fruitless in the end, and despite multiple opportunities to steal the full three points, they had to settle for just a single point heading into their third Phase One game against Atlante next Tuesday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m. CT.
