Storylines | Minnesota United’s Playoff Probabilities

It’s finally here, friends: Decision Day 2026, the make-or-break, the do-or-die. After a statement win against LAFC stretched Minnesota United’s unbeaten run to six, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks a lot like… oh? The 2026 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs? Yeah, that’s a pretty epic light.

If the Black and Blue win this weekend and a handful of other results go their way, the boys might just clinch a playoff spot for the third consecutive season. As the squad hovers on the precipice of either elimination or clinching, we’re keeping an eye on several other Decision Day fixtures around the league. We have a lot to cover, so let’s get into it.

What’s At Stake?

The Quakes

San Jose may have clinched several matchdays ago, but they’ve still got plenty to play for. As it stands, the Quakes are third in the West (52 points), between second-place Dallas (55) and fourth-place St. Louis CITY (51). These guys aren’t at any risk of dropping out of a top-four spot, unless the Loons absolutely destroy them with an eight-goal difference in a single game. (Hey, anything’s possible.)

Now they’re just playing to determine how difficult their Round One matchups will be. With Vancouver already having clinched the conference title, San Jose will play either the fifth, sixth, or seventh-seed finisher, depending on their results on the day. To surpass Dallas, two things need to happen:

  1. San Jose wins in Minnesota (Boo! We don’t like this one!)
  1. Dallas loses to Colorado (As we’ll learn shortly, we don’t like this either.)

A Dallas loss and San Jose win would put the two teams on even ground in both the points and wins column, triggering the goal differential tiebreaker, which San Jose would naturally win in this scenario. The Quakes have a clear goal to meet this weekend, but they’re not dealing with stakes nearly as big as Minnesota’s.

The Loons

Decision Day will either bring the Loons’ 2026 run to an end or be the beginning of a challenging, exhilarating playoff run. We’re rooting for the latter, but several things have to occur in quick succession to make that happen.

Obviously, the Loons have to beat San Jose on Saturday — a draw won’t cut it. A three-point result would automatically sandwich them between LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake (who will play each other on Decision Day, meaning if the Loons win, one would finish ahead and one would finish behind the Loons). Then, the squad needs two of three scenarios to come true. Let’s break ‘em down, shall we?

Austin vs. Portland

What MNUFC needs: Portland loss at Austin

How likely is it?: Austin is sitting at 14th in the West, but they’ve proven a bit unpredictable as of late. They’ve only beaten two teams in the last two months, but those two teams were on absolute opposite ends of the table: the Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting Kansas City. Still, two wins out of 11 is a pretty rough run, and Austin has only won eight total this year. They have a goal differential of -21 and have struggled to find consistency amid some pretty major turnover. El Tree have been solidly eliminated from playoff contention for a while and are for the most part in rebuild mode, with nothing to play for except spoiling Portland’s glory.

And Portland, who absolutely killed Matchday 34 with their big 3-1 win over Houston, is more motivated than ever. They’re in eighth place, but a win could bump them above the play-in line and allow them to skip the Wild Card matchup and dodge Vancouver as a Round One opponent. The Timbers won’t be comfortable settling for a draw here, and beating them is a tall order. But hope is not lost! Portland has struggled on the road all season long with a 3-10-3 record, and Austin would love nothing more than to play spoiler on the final day of the season.

Dallas vs. Colorado

What MNUFC needs: Colorado loss at Dallas

How likely is it?: On paper, Dallas is the clear winner here. Colorado has won only two matches on the road this year, while Dallas is 8-3-5 at home. They’ve been a force to be reckoned with this year, currently at second in the West with 55 points. The only thing that could dethrone them from second seed is, like we mentioned above, a combination of their game going badly and San Jose’s going extremely well. On most fronts, Los Toros are looking pretty secure up there in second place.

However, they’re coming off a string of less-than-ideal results: a shutout loss at home to Columbus followed by a 1-1 draw against SKC. They’ll need to turn it back up against a Rapids side that’s not only fighting to jump out of ninth seed, but also pulled one over on Vancouver and tied San Jose earlier this month. Much like Portland, Colorado doesn’t have the wiggle room going into this match to be okay with a draw. They need three points. And Striker Morgan Whittaker has scored three goals in as many games, so I wouldn’t count these guys out just yet.

Seattle vs. LAFC

What MNUFC needs: Seattle loss or draw vs. LAFC

The Sounders were absolutely thrashed on Matchday 34, falling to Vancouver by a four-point goal deficit. It was a result that bumped them to the 10th spot, taking their destiny out of their own hands and putting them in a position where they likely need a win, and potentially some help, to jump back above the line on Decision Day.

LAFC is always a threat, but Minnesota just proved (in a beautiful game) that the Black and Gold are not unbreakable. Seattle will be looking for that same energy this weekend.

Sixth-place LAFC doesn’t have that much to play for — they can’t jump to fifth or drop to seventh. Their main motivation going into this weekend is getting back into form before their playoff run. Nobody wants to stagger into the postseason on back-to-back losses. It’s no good for the Loons if the Sounders manage to defeat LAFC. Let’s hope LAFC uses their loss to the Loons to solidly bounce back.

Remember, Minnesota United needs two of those three results, plus a win over San Jose, to clinch. And if all of those events occur, the Loons will actually jump to eighth seed, meaning they’d host the Wild Card match on November 19 at Allianz Field.

Two of the three seem more likely than not, at least on paper, but you really never know when it comes down to the wire. Desperation and hunger can do a lot, especially against teams that have already gotten comfortable with their top-of-the-table spots. For the Loons, this Decision Day will come down to a kick-butt performance and a little bit of good luck.
