MNUFC Secure Three Points in Chilly Home Opener

MINCINRecap

Well, how about that for a chili home opener? Sorry, chilly — Cincinnati’s on the mind. Minnesota United took down FC Cincinnati by a 1-0 scoreline in their first match at Allianz Field in 2026, making it four points from two games to start their tenth season in MLS. Kelvin Yeboah’s second-half goal was the difference-maker at full-time, punctuating what was an impressive, slow-burning performance from the hosts.

Coach Knowles rolled out nearly the same starting lineup as Matchday 1, with the lone change being Jefferson Díaz in for DJ Taylor on the right side of the back three. The continued evolution of the Loons’ tactical setup was on full display, leading to yet another slow start. The visitors pressed high and effectively early on, pinning the ball in Drake Callender’s box and keeping the hosts from crossing midfield more than a handful of times until the 20th minute.

As the Loons began to grow into the match, the efforts of Nectarios Triantis and Tomás Chancalay enabled the Black and Blue to win the ball high, forcing Cincinnati to bring numbers back and opening space up for the hosts to play into. With less pressure to absorb and more freedom to move the ball, center backs Morris Duggan and Jefferson Díaz were given license to drive forward, sparking dangerous counterattacks and helping to turn the tide of the match.

Though it was scoreless at the half, the Loons came off on the front foot. The trademark directness that defined their playstyle in 2025 was clearly influencing this match, with some slight positional adjustments changing the way they looked on the break and in possession. With their shape beginning to click, the second half was full of promise — and it started with some flair.

After catching Roman Celentano off his line in the 48th minute, Triantis took his chances from midfield with an audacious chip attempt. It went just over the bar, but MNUFC (and San Diego) fans know that's well within his range. The following minutes saw the likes of Joaquín Pereyra and Chancalay causing problems in the attacking third, taking advantage of spaces left in a very transitional game.

The pressure paid off in the 64th minute, when Pereyra drew a foul at the edge of the 18. Chancalay’s subsequent free kick deflected off the Cincinnati wall, bounced off the right post, and connected with the onrushing head of Kelvin Yeboah for his second goal in as many games.

With the lead established, the Loons shifted their shape to put numbers behind the ball, but that didn’t stop them from threatening to grab another. They closed out the match with composure and class, using excellent hold-up play to produce several dangerous chances, and building on the standout performance of Drake Callender, who denied Cincinnati with a handful of crucial, acrobatic saves to preserve his side’s lead. Despite the forced substitution of club captain Michael Boxall the backline stood tall, with Devin Padelford stepping in to cover for the veteran center back for the final 20 minutes.

All things considered, it was a fantastic match to bring year 10 to Allianz Field. The play on the field was matched by the passion in the stands, and the result reflected the desire shown by the Black and Blue faithful. The Loons won’t be back home until March 22, with their next two matchups coming on the road. Catch them next week as they take on Nashville SC, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 7.
