Minnesota United today announced the hiring of its first General Manager of Allianz Field and introduced its “Strategic Collaboration Operations Agreement” with the club’s MLB neighbors, the Minnesota Twins.
MNUFC promoted from within to fill the position of General Manager of Allianz Field — the club’s privately-financed, soccer-specific stadium set to open in Spring 2019 — hiring current Director of Match Day Operations Justin Borrell for the position.
Borrell has been with the Loons for five seasons and brings great experience with the day-to-day operations of a major facility. He has directed MNUFC operations and managed relationships with the University of Minnesota and the National Sports Center, the club’s training facility, and is familiar with all of the key players of the Allianz Field project, from Populous to Mortenson, Tegra and beyond. His firsthand knowledge of Allianz Field development and infrastructure has been a major asset through the countless hours he has already given to the project.
“I am excited to announce that Justin Borrell has accepted the position of General Manager of Allianz Field,” said MNUFC Chief Executive Officer Chris Wright. “Justin has played an integral role in the development of our plans for the operation of the iconic soccer stadium that we are developing in Saint Paul. His passion, experience and desire to build and operate a stadium of this magnitude while providing an elite fan experience in the upper Midwest is to be applauded. Justin will now begin to build a staff that will get us ready for the opening of Allianz Field in March of 2019.”

MNUFC also introduced a strategic collaboration with the Minnesota Twins, who will consult with the club on all aspects of the operations of Allianz Field.
Twins Senior Vice President of Operations Matt Hoy will be the Loons’ primary contact, collaborating and coordinating closely with Borrell. The Twins will also advise MNUFC on the care and upkeep of its field turf through head groundskeeper Larry DiVito.
“Not only are we thrilled to have Bob Pohlad represent the Pohlad family in our ownership group, we are also excited to have the Minnesota Twins leadership team as an active part of the group that will help us manage and operate Allianz Field,” said Wright. “We appreciate the influence of Matt Hoy in shaping our operating philosophy as well as the help and support of Larry DiVito, Kip Elliott and Dave St. Peter, who continue to be great partners surrounding all aspects of our operations.”
