MNUFC Clinches Spot in 2019 MLS Playoffs

Clinched

On a historic night at Allianz Field, a dramatic 2-1 victory for Minnesota United over Sporting Kansas City means the Loons have booked their spot in the 2019 Playoffs presented by Cub, Taylor Communications and Minnesota Lottery for the first time in club history.

What Now?

With a spot in the playoffs locked up and two games remaining this season, MNUFC are now faced with the task of securing a playoff game at Allianz Field. If Minnesota United are to finish second, third or fourth in the Western Conference, Allianz Field would be the venue of Minnesota’s First Round playoff game, which would be either Saturday, October 19 or Sunday, October 20.

As of the game’s final whistle, the Western Conference table above the playoff line is as follows.

  1. LAFC – 65 points, 31 games played, 19 wins, +44 goal differential
  2. Minnesota United – 52 points, 32 games played, 15 wins, +10 goal differential
  3. SeattleSounders – 50 points, 32 games played, 14 wins, +1 goal differential
  4. LAGalaxy – 49 points, 32 games played, 15 wins, +1 goal differential
  5. RealSaltLake – 48 points, 32 games played, 14 wins, +4 goal differential
  6. FCDallas – 45 points, 32 games played, 12 wins, +5 goal differential
  7. SanJoseEarthquakes – 44 points, 31 games played, 13 wins, +1 goal differential

(The Galaxy and RSL were tied 0-0 at the end of Minnesota’s game.)

Keep in mind that the first tiebreaker for teams with the same number of points is the number of wins a team has amassed. If this is also equal, the next tiebreaker is a team’s goal differential. If these standings lock in, here’s how the First Round of the 2019 Western Conference Playoffs would look:

LAFC (1) – First round bye

LA Galaxy (4) vs. Real Salt Lake (5) | October 19/20
Dignity Health Sports Park | Carson, California

Seattle Sounders (3) vs. FC Dallas (6) | October 19/20
Century Link Field | Seattle, Washington

Minnesota United (2) vs. San Jose Earthquakes (7) | October 19/20
Allianz Field | Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Loons have two games remaining in the 2019 MLS Season as they look to hold on to second place in the Western Conference. Minnesota United welcomes LAFC to Allianz Field this Sunday, September 29, presented by Element Electronics, and then it finishes out the regular season on October 6 with a Decision Day matchup at Century Link Field against the Seattle Sounders.
