MNUFC Clinch Home Playoff Game

Allianz

Drama, controversy and thrilling playoff-deciding games are what Decision Day – the final afternoon of the MLS regular season when all 24 teams are in action simultaneously – has become notoriously known for. As expected, this year’s Decision Day did not disappoint.

Although Minnesota United dropped a tough 1-0 loss at CenturyLink Field against the Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy were downed 4-2 on the road against the Houston Dynamo. The result maintained the Loons’ claim on their bid to host a playoff game at Allianz Field. Finishing with 53 points, a back-and-forth afternoon saw MNUFC move from second, to fifth and back to fourth place as goals flew in around MLS.

After this afternoon’s action that meant the completion of the 2019 MLS regular season, the Western Conference table above the playoff line is as follows:

  1. LAFC – 72 points, 34 games played, 21 wins, +48 goal differential
  2. SeattleSounders – 56 points, 34 games played, 16 wins, +3 goal differential
  3. RealSaltLake – 53 points, 34 games played, 16 wins, +5 goal differential
  4. Minnesota United – 53 points, 34 games played, 15 wins, +9 goal differential
  5. LAGalaxy – 51 points, 34 games played, 16 wins, -1 differential
  6. Portland Timbers – 49 points, 34 games played, 14 wins, +3 goal differential
  7. FCDallas – 48 points, 34 games played, 13 wins, +8 goal differential

Once again, keep in mind that the first tiebreaker used in MLS for teams that have the same number of points is the number of wins a team has amassed throughout the season. If both teams also have the same number of wins, the next tiebreaker used is a team’s goal differential – the difference between the number of goals a team has scored and the number of goals it has conceded. With these standings finally locked in, here’s how the First Round of the 2019 Western Conference Playoffs will look like:

LAFC (1) – First round bye

Minnesota United FC (4) vs. LA Galaxy (5) | October 20
Allianz Field | Saint Paul, Minnesota

Real Salt Lake (3) vs. Portland Timbers (6) | October 19
Rio Tinto Stadium | Sandy, Utah

Seattle Sounders (2) vs. FC Dallas (7) | October 19
CenturyLink Field | Seattle, Washington
