The verdict is in: A tree falling in the friendly confines of Allianz Field DOES make a sound, and it sounds a whole lot like a smash hit by Oasis. Your Loons earned their third league win in a row tonight, taking down the Portland Timbers by a score of 2-0. While both teams had their chances in this one, it was the home side who proved the more clinical and efficient, putting on yet another impressive performance in front of the Black and Blue faithful.
Head Coach Cameron Knowles stuck with the same lineup that won in San Diego, allowing them to build off of their performances on the West Coast. Their gametime together has clearly resulted in a great understanding among the group, as the passing and movement from the entire Loons squad were absolutely electrifying tonight, leaving the visitors helpless on more than one occasion.Â
An extremely open start to proceedings saw both sides earn chances within the first three minutes, setting the stage for an end-to-end match. Counters going both ways got the players warmed up early, but the steady, measured defending from the Loons kept things under control. While the whole squad put in quite a shift tonight, it was the MNUFC front three of JoaquĂn Pereyra, Kelvin Yeboah, and Tomás Chancalay who really stole the show in this one, and it didn’t take long for them to get going.Â
After a particularly promising passage in the attacking third, Jefferson Diaz cut the ball back to the top of the box, where a waiting Chancalay had time to take a touch and pick out the upper left corner of the goal for his first goal as a Loon — and the lead, of course. Knowles’ side was looking lively and confident at the quarter-hour mark, and they only got better from there.
Both sides nearly snuck a goal in right before the half, but the goalposts on either end of the field turned out to be friendly to both keepers, and the Loons went into the break with their one-goal lead intact.Â
A slower start to the second half suited the Black and Blue, who really began to flex their defensive muscles as they took control. Some truly silky passing sequences in the 48th and 54th minutes showed just how comfortable they were in this one, playing out of pressure and keeping the Timbers from keeping numbers high. The best example of this came in the 60th minute, when the Loons’ attacking trio linked up beautifully to double the lead.Â
What began with a Portland turnover saw the Loons find Pereyra with space on the right side of the pitch. He picked his head up to see Chancalay’s run on the other side, unleashing an inch-perfect cross-field pass to his fellow Argentinian Loon. Chancalay’s flawless first touch gave him enough time to pull the defenders and the keeper toward him, only for him to slot the ball across the six-yard box for the onrushing Yeboah to double the lead in style.Â
The hosts didn’t necessarily sit back after their second goal of the night, but they were definitely more patient off the ball, preserving their lead and opting to let Portland make their own mistakes. Several more counterattacking opportunities nearly saw them grab a third, and some valuable substitute appearances from Devin Padelford, Mauricio González, Wil Trapp, Mamadou Dieng, and James RodrĂguez gave the Loons the extra energy they needed to maintain their level of intensity through the final whistle.Â
Words can’t really do justice to the interplay between MNUFC’s front three tonight — but I’ll try. With seemingly telepathic passing, constant movement, and an intensity that was present both on and off the ball, Pereyra, Yeboah, and Chancalay were on another level all night long, with the latter two putting in their best performances in Black and Blue in this writer’s eyes. Don’t take your eyes off this trio, folks.Â
With this result, the Loons extended their unbeaten run to four league games. They have yet to concede a goal at home in 2026, outscoring their opponents a combined 3-0 in their three home games this season. With 14 points, they’re up to sixth in the Western Conference through eight games played. If I weren’t so paranoid about jinxing them, I’d say that they seem to have found their stride under Coach Knowles. But you didn’t hear it from me.Â
Your Loons will be back in action this Wednesday in Texas, with a midweek fixture against FC Dallas up next on the schedule. Tune in on Apple TV to keep up with the action, or join us at The Loop West End for our official watch party at 6:00 p.m. to catch the match with like-minded Loons.
