ETHAN FINLAY: 10 things you don’t know about me

1. My daily ritual is …

“Two things I can control every day is my attitude and my work ethic. And, then I always have a coffee in the morning.”

2. On the significance behind my goal celebrations …

“No significance. It’s me expressing everything that goes into a goal and maybe that’s just my way of expressing relief of that thing hitting the back of the net.”

3. I’m scared of …

“Snakes. I don’t do snakes. There is just something about it. No legs, slithering around and they can get into places. Yeah, snakes, I am out on.”

4. Something that’s on my bucket list …

“I want to go over to Europe – and England specifically – and spend a weekend going to EPL games. Going Saturday, Sunday to a full slate of games. Doing that with a couple buddies, a couple soccer guys. That would be something I would want to do.”

5. I’m proud of myself for …

“I would say a recent thing is just coming back from a torn ACL and to not only be healthy, but to start getting back to the performances and the standard that I had before the injury. Definitely most proud of that right now.”

6. I’m currently binge watching this on Netflix …

Mindhunter just started back up with season two, so I’m on that, and Big Little Lies just ended. I would be lying saying my wife got me into that show… I got my wife into that show. We really liked that show, so those two.”

7. The best life advice I have ever received …

“I would say the quote that I gave you at the start, ‘The two things you can control every day are your attitude and your work ethic.’ I got that from somebody from way back when, and my dad kind of reminded me of it for a couple weeks when I was going through some tough times in youth soccer. We had moved into Wisconsin and I didn’t really have a competitive situation. He said individually you can control a lot with those two things, so it kind of became a little bit of my motto.”

8. On the significance behind my number …

“Number 13 was the number I received in preseason my very first year, and I had, maybe still, the best preseason I’ve had eight years later. Scored a bunch of goals and was playing really well, so I was like, well, I can’t give up this number. So when they came to me three, four weeks later when the season was about to start and asked if I wanted to switch to any other number, some of the numbers had opened up, I was stuck on 13.”

9. One of my pet peeves is …

“So, I am pretty clean. I do not like to have dishes in the sink. And so my wife leaves dishes – which doesn’t happen too often – and even myself sometimes and I just get to a point where I can’t go to sleep with dirty dishes in the sink.”

10. On my first dog …

“We had a family dog before, but Lola is my first dog. We treat our dog like – what I assume – you would treat a child. The amount of money we spend on miscellaneous things. In fact, we were at Target just last night and all of a sudden you start buying something like, ‘Oh here’s this and this sweater, fall is coming.’ Lola is very much a part of the family. She’s one of the bigger expenses if you look at the monthly bill sometimes.”
