Minnesota United has signed French fullback Wilfried Moimbé from France’s Ligue 2 side AS Nancy-Lorraine, the team announced today. Moimbé will join the Loons pending a physical and receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Moimbé will occupy an international spot on Minnesota’s roster.
“We’ve added another experienced piece [in Wilfried] to what’s going to be a really important last half of the season – he’s vastly experienced, very athletic,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We’ve been so pleased with Chase Gasper’s emergence but we are mindful of the fact that Chase is the only natural left back that we have on the roster at this moment in time. This will bring added competition. It’s another important piece because we want to keep incrementally adding to the squad and improving the already talented roster that we have. We feel as though this will be important for us moving forward for the rest of the season.”
The 30-year-old left back will provide experience and depth to the Loons’ backline. He joins the Loons after spending the 2018-2019 season with French Ligue 2’s AS Nancy-Lorraine where he played 26 games and scored two goals across 2,181 minutes. Moimbé began his career in 2005 with French Ligue 1 club FC Girondins de Bordeaux, where he played one game, in the final group stage of the 2007–08 UEFA Cup, scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute. While with Bordeaux, he was loaned out to Ligue 2’s Reims in 2008, making 20 game appearances, scoring one goal and Ligue 2’s Ajaccio in 2009, making 32 game appearances with one assist. Throughout his career, Moimbé has made 259 appearances, across 20,492 minutes with five goals and nine assists.
