Preseason Update: Florida Day One

Training 1

Minnesota United kicked off week two of its 2018 preseason training on Monday in Melbourne, Florida, with a day of double sessions in the rain and sun, on the pitch and in the ocean.

“Sunday was a travel day,” explained Head Coach Adrian Heath. “So, this morning, we didn’t want it to be a crazy day, but we wanted them to get on the ball. They enjoyed being outside on the grass — beautiful surface. In the afternoon, we’ve just done a little bit of work outside and in the pool and in the sea –– which one or two of them didn’t like [laughs].

“It’s been a good first day,” he went on, “but now we need to start to ramp it up. I’m really looking forward to starting to integrate the players that we’ve brought in. It’s going to be an important week for us.”

Twenty-seven players trained on Monday, including two trialists: goalkeeper Kyle Ihn and left back Jiro Toyama. Christian Ramirez joined the team later that evening from his time in Carson, California, with the U.S. national team.

“We’ve had a couple of trialists come and join us, obviously to make the numbers up,” said Heath. “We’re really pleased, John Pascarella –– the goalkeeper coach –– has worked with one of the keepers before. And we’ve heard a lot of good stuff about the young Japanese left back Jiro [Toyama]. He’s been in college down here in Florida. We brought him in to have a look and he did very well first day. So, we’ll see how they do by the end of the week.”
