Expansion Draft Primer

Corner Kick

The newest club in MLS, Los Angeles FC, will be making several additions to its 2018 MLS roster tomorrow through the Expansion Draft. Like Minnesota United did last year, LAFC will select five players from teams across the league to be added to their squad ahead of next season.

However, LAFC will not be able to select just any player in the draft. The other 22 clubs each released a list of eleven players they wish to protect following the Half-Day Trade Window on Sunday. Homegrown and Generation adidas players are automatically protected in addition to the protected list. Any players that do not fall into those categories are able to be selected by LAFC. Only one player can be taken from any team.

First, a quick refresher for those that need it. If a player has spent at least one year in a club’s youth academy and meet other necessary requirements, that club can sign them as a Homegrown Player. Generation adidas (GA) players are top college underclassmen or youth national team players that have been signed by the league prior to the MLS SuperDraft. Homegrown and GA players who are on a club’s Supplemental or Reserve roster do not count against the club’s salary budget.

Following the conclusion of the draft, we will then get a taste of what LA plans to do with their selections. Do they want to go the route of MNUFC and use most of their selections to trade up for other players? Or will they hold on to them to build out roster depth?

One thing is certain: it will get very busy following the conclusion of the draft on Tuesday. Moves will be made across the league as Free Agency opens up and clubs prepare for Stage One of the Re-Entry Draft on Friday.
