Notes & Quotes: MINvSJ -

Head Coach Adrian Heath

On the match overall:
Obviously, really disappointed with the result. I thought we showed too little too late. I wanted in the second half to get higher up the field. I thought we gave them too much respect and too much time and space to play in the first half. Second half was a little bit better. I thought the introduction of Abu and Ish gave us some life. I'm disappointed. We're better than that and I thought it was very much a nearly night: we were nearly good, we had nearly balls, we nearly got it to people. It's disappointing considering the momentum we've had in the last three or four weeks.

On whether fatigue was a factor in taking off Venegas and Molino:
I'm not sure. I just expect more of them, that's the bottom line.

On taking Venegas off first:
I wanted a little bit more energy. I'm sorry. I thought the two young'uns came on and gave us that. They gave their teammates a lift, they gave the crowd a lift. That's what we expect. I support my players, always will do, but I expect certain things in return and I thought that we were a little bit lacking in certain parts this evening.

On the offense's drop in production:
I think we've had a couple of nearly chances this evening. I'd like to say whether there was a bounty on Molino in the first half. The strange thing is, do I think we deserved to win? No. But I didn't think we deserved to lose the game, either. That's disappointing. I'll have to watch the game again and see what our forward play was like. I thought we lost the ball too much in their half. Cheap turnovers. And you keep turning the ball over, it becomes an issue because you don't get any momentum, you don't get any sustained pressure and that's what happened this evening.

On the backline:
I thought we were very good in the first half at times when we had to defend. Like all of Dom's teams, they work the penalty area, a bit of size, a bit of pace, they always have that. But on the whole, I thought we defended quite well. I thought Calvo was outstanding at times this evening.

On Abu's growth:
He came in with a lot of hype and it's taken us three or four weeks to get him where I think he's match fit. His training has been absolutely superb for the last two or three weeks. He gave us what I thought he would. He gave us some energy and some life. I think he sparked his teammates, he sparked the crowd and it was a good shift for him. He's put himself very firmly in a chance to start next week.

On Ish's MLS debut:
I thought he did the same. He did well. He had a good run, he had his little stepover and put a couple of good balls in the box and showed some life. He's another one who's training really, really well. As I've said to the players, for the guys that are not in the team, Monday to Friday is when they can impress the coaching staff to show you that they can actually come in and contribute and that's what they've done, the pair of them. Gave us some life.

On getting the second half energy into the first half:
I think sometimes you start slower in certain games. Other games we started well and brightly. I thought we gave them too much respect and dropped off too much and gave them a foothold in the game and made it comfortable for them. I thought the second half we got higher up the pitch, we got people closer to people and made them play quicker than they want to.

On not connecting on the final ball:
We had some really good combination play in the first half — that 20 meters outside of the penalty area — and our final ball wasn't good enough. As I say, it was a nearly night. Nearly really good and unfortunately that's not going to be enough, so we'll regroup and have a look at the video and see where we are for next week against a really difficult opponent. It's not going to get easier, but we'll see where we are.

On Shuttleworth's performance:
He's doing what we expect of him. He's making the saves he should and occasionally coming up with saves that maybe he shouldn't. It doesn't surprise me, he's a really good goalkeeper, very experienced at this level. As I say, he's saving stuff that he should and he can be well pleased with the form he's in at this moment in time.

On feeling more at home at TCF Bank Stadium:
Our crowd is starting to get into it and I thought second half the atmosphere was really good. But we gave them something in the second half. As I said to the players at halftime, we need to get the crowd involved in the game and the way you do that is by working the penalty area. Getting crosses in, getting shots in, playing in their half of the field, showing some endeavor, showing some running in behind. I thought we did that in the second half. I don't think it's a coincidence that we were a lot better.

MNUFC Midfielder Ismaila Jome

On his MLS debut:
It was good. It was exciting. Especially at home. Tough that we had a loss, but I’m glad I could get in the game. It was just unfortunate we had to lose the game.

On earning playing time in training:
It means a lot. I know the gaffer’s is always telling me to work hard and stay focused and I’ll get my opportunity and today I got that opportunity.

On looking comfortable in his debut:
It’s just a soccer game. I’ve been playing soccer all of my life so I wasn’t too nervous about it. I was just more excited than anything.

Adrian’s instructions at before coming on:
He said to just stay high and stay wide and use my athletic ability to take the guy on one-on-one when I got an opportunity. Get service into the box and try to spark some life into the team.

On personal performance:
I think I did well. If I’m being honest I had a few passes that I misplaced that I shouldn’t have, but I think I did well in my first 15 minutes.

Anything surprising playing at MLS level?
Not really. I played a preseason game in Portland and I felt like that was a good testament to what MLS level would be. I mean, it’s a lot faster pace that in NASL, but I think just getting used to it over time I’ll get better and showcase myself more.

On being a local kid and having family and friends at the match:
Yeah I had a lot of friends here tonight so it was good to have them see my home debut.

On bringing energy into the match:
It’s really important. [Heath] stressed after the game that it was good that we came on and brought some life. We just need to come on and do what we can and work hard for the team and just try to make something happen.

Minnesota United Forward Abu Danladi

On his perspective when entering the match:
When I came in we were down a goal. So my first motivation was to come on and help score a goal and when I talked to Adrian he told me, he always tells me defenders don’t want you to run in behind them and that’s what I should do, and that’s what I came in to do. Always getting the ball by also creating spaces for either Christian or Miguel on the outside as well. That’s what I came in to do. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a result, you could see everyone really worked hard and didn’t want to lose. It’s part of the game so you win some and you lose some. It’s something we need to see what we did wrong, and this coming week work on and get ready for Sporting KC.

On getting a few more minutes tonight:
It doesn’t matter how much minutes I get, it’s all about coming and seeing the situation where the team is. Either up a goal or down a goal and try to help the team as much as I can. Adrian brings me in for five minutes, two minutes and tells me what to do I that’s what I come in to do. It’s great getting more minutes today. Getting used to the game more and more. Every minute I get is a learning experience for me. Getting to play for these guys and working to get better and better.

On his late-match chance:
It was a ball to Miggy and I run off him and he passed me the ball. My first instinct as a forward is to look at the goalkeeper and make a decision right away because it’s all about making the decision, because if you don’t make a quick decision then the defender comes and covers. I saw the goalkeeper and I knew I had more space and I thought that I could hit it. I hit it and it went a little bit wide. And of course after things happen you know you had other options. Miggy was running and next time something with another option if I think I can cut it back I could do that. But at the moment, it would be a good idea to hit it.

On coming into the match trailing:
It’s better when you come in when you’re up a goal or two. It’s always best for the team. Sometimes it doesn’t happen like that and sometimes the coach will put you in a situation when you’re one or two nil down and it’s all up to you coming in. Even if you’re not going to score you’re motivating the team as well with your energy.

On working toward a starting position:
Coming here, he’s the one who drafted me here. It’s been a great experience working with him. He played the game and he played the position I’m in. Every advice I get from him I make the best out of it. He’s played the game at a high level and now I’m coming up and playing in the league. And he tells me what to do and I do that. Nothing else matters except helping the team and putting the team first. If Adrian makes his first eleven and I’m not in, he knows what’s right and what is best for the team. So I’m always ready on the bench mentally ready to come in. Start or no start I’m always ready to go.
