Minnesota acquires Bobby Shuttleworth in trade with New England

Shuttleworth signing

Minnesota United FC announced today that the club has acquired goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from the New England Revolution in exchange for forward Femi Hollinger-Janzen.

Shuttleworth, 29, spent eight seasons with the Revolution from 2009-2016 and totaled 127 appearances, 124 starts, 34 shutouts, 344 saves, and a 46-53-28 regular season record with New England. The Tonawanda, N.Y. native anchored the Revolution during its run to the 2014 MLS Cup, a season in which he tied a club record with 16 wins, and also totaled six postseason starts during the 2014 and 2015 campaigns.

“Bobby’s a great player who has had a lot of strong performances in goal for New England,” said Sporting Director Manny Lagos. “His experience and quality will be an important addition and asset throughout the season here with the club.”

Hollinger-Janzen, 23, made a significant impact in his rookie campaign. As a third-round selection (51st overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, he made 19 appearances, including one start, and registered two goals with one assist. Femi was one of only three players selected in the third round or later of the 2016 SuperDraft to make a regular season appearance. The former Indiana University star ranked second on the club with 18 substitute appearances in 2016, and was named the Santander Man of the Month for May after scoring twice, including a game-winning goal against Seattle on May 28, and adding one assist.

Hollinger-Janzen, who also goes simply by Femi, was selected by Minnesota United FC with the 10th overall selection in the 2017 MLS Expansion Draft. He spent the beginning of the 2017 preseason in training with Minnesota.

Minnesota United makes its home MLS debut on March 12 at TCF Bank Stadium against fellow expansion side Atlanta United. Fans who want to be there for every home match can join the Itasca Society. Over 10,000 season tickets have already been sold, rapidly approaching the inaugural season limit of 11,842 members in this exclusive club — one for every lake in Minnesota. A portion of all proceeds from these season tickets are donated to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Loon Monitoring program. Both season tickets and single match tickets are available now at MNUFC.COM or by calling 763.4SOCCER.
