It’s the first year in the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs for your beloved Twos, and boy, have they put their best foot forward. This postseason is one for the underdogs in the Western Conference, with not one but two big upsets eliminating the first- and second-seeded teams in dramatic fashion. MNUFC2 pulled off a brilliant 2-0 victory over top-of-the-league St. Louis CITY2, knocking the top dogs out of the playoffs and booking Minnesota’s spot in the conference finals. They now take on Colorado Rapids 2, who recently logged an upset of their own with a 4-2 road victory over The Town FC.
Logan Dorsey set the club’s single-season record on Sunday with 11 goals across all competitions, demonstrating the same strong striker instincts he has all season with his positioning in the attacking third and combination of speed and fancy footwork. Keeper Kayne Rizvanovich, who on Sunday logged the club’s first-ever playoff clean sheet (on his birthday!) now leads the club this season in saves, wins, and shutouts. In the midfield, Momoh Kamara and Alexis Fariña have been consistently setting the tempo with big combinations and smart movement on both sides of the ball. The boys are on their A-game for the postseason, and the energy is only getting more potent as they approach the biggest game of the year.
The Rapids, who beat The Town with a whopping four different goal scorers last weekend, have a talented roster of their own. Billo Diop leads the team in both scoring and shots on target by a landslide, adding his playoff goal to a regular-season count of 14. Alex Harris and Antony GarcÃa have both scored in each of the Rapids’ postseason appearances so far, and keeper Zack Campagnolo has been putting in solid performances in net, accumulating seven saves in the team’s two playoff appearances.
The Twos have taken on Colorado three times this season, twice on the road and once at home, and emerged victorious every time. They scored two goals in each of the three fixtures — all by different goal scorers — and a fourth victory over the intrepid third seed would secure a coveted spot in the finals and a shot at the MLS NEXT Pro Cup.
With the Eastern Conference Finals between top-seeded New York Red Bulls II and second seed Philadelphia Union II slated for Saturday, the victor of the Colorado vs. Minnesota clash will know their final opponent ahead of Sunday’s fixture, as well as the host site for MLS NEXT Pro Cup.
In their very first year in the playoffs, the boys are just two wins away from the trophy. Don’t miss a truly historic matchup as the Loons land at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this Sunday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. CT. Catch the action live on MLS Season Pass.
