California’s coming to Minnesota for a change, as LAFC are set to take the pitch at Allianz Field this Saturday. With these two sides currently level on 17 points apiece, this midday showdown is shaping up to be one of the most exciting games of the weekend; you’re not going to want to miss this one.

Minnesota United (5-2-2)

Run of Form: W-W-D-W-W (All competitions)

Where to begin? Your Loons have been on fire recently, unbeaten in their last six games across league and Open Cup play, and taking down opponents who take a wide variety of approaches to the game. High press from Dallas? No problem. Death by passing against Portland and San Diego? Again, no problem for MNUFC. This team’s ability to adapt to the game in front of them and find the back of the net against very different setups is one of the most promising markers of a serious contender in this league, and if they can keep this form rolling, it won’t be long before the Loons force their way into some conversations about Major League Soccer’s best sides.

LAFC (5-2-2)

Run of Form: D-L-D-L-W (All competitions)

After a legendary start to the year, LAFC have cooled down quite a bit lately. Through their first six games, they outscored opponents 14-0, picking up five wins and one draw. It was the longest streak without conceding a goal to start the season in MLS history, and it was incredible. But, alongside that blistering league start, the Black and Gold have been making their way through Concacaf Champions Cup play, and the congestion caught up to them. Now, they haven’t won any of their last three MLS games, and while their talent is undeniable, something simply isn’t clicking quite the same at the moment.

Keys to the Match:

Let the Good Times Roll

The question on everyone’s lips right now: To rotate, or not to rotate? Your Loons are riding that impressive six-game unbeaten run into this match, and they’ve used the same starting eleven in each of their last four league games. The only time they’ve deviated was for the midweek Open Cup game in Sacramento, and even then, midfielder Owen Gene and defender Morris Duggan remained in the starting lineup. The key to this run for MNUFC is very clearly tied to their consistency, but with two very tough games coming up within just days of one another, you’ve got to wonder if Coach Knowles will try to make a few changes. Their Saturday opponents may serve as a cautionary tale, though, as LAFC’s dip in form coincided with their decision to rotate the lineup against Portland to preserve energy for their CCC second leg. Since then, they’ve lost their rhythm, proving that messing with a working lineup is just about the worst thing you can do — if you’re not careful about it. If Knowles does turn to his bench, he’s got plenty of talented options to call on, but it may not be worth disrupting this starting lineup’s mojo. If anything, some earlier subs might do the trick of getting players the rest they need while stretching this run of form as much as possible.

Another Day of Son

LAFC superstar forward Heung-Min Son has been electric for the entirety of his decade-and-a-half-long career. From his days in the German Bundesliga to making his name in a Tottenham shirt, his mixture of pace, technical ability, and pure work rate have made him one of the world’s best players for quite some time now. So, you may be surprised to hear that he hasn’t scored a single goal in the 2026 MLS regular season. That said, he does have seven assists to his name, and he’s found the back of the net in CCC action. After years spent combining with Harry Kane, Sonny has learned how to be equally as effective as a supplier as he is a scorer, meaning he’s got more than one way to get under the skin of MNUFC’s back line this weekend. Whether he lines up at striker or on one of the wings, the likes of Romero and Diaz will need to be at their absolute best to contend with this world-class talent. The consolation prize for the defender who doesn’t get to face Son? They get to defend Denis Bouanga all game long instead. No matter how you slice it, this rapid, technically superb duo is going to test the Black and Blue for 90 minutes. Drop back, and they’ll run at you. Step high, they’ll run behind you. There’s no easy way to slow these guys down, but stopping the supply of balls to their feet might be the best place to start. A more aggressive press from the Loons could potentially do the trick; we’ll just have to wait and see.

We Got Options

Whether Coach Knowles rotates his roster or not, the Loons have demonstrated a calmness and adaptability that few teams in MLS can match. As I alluded to in the run of form section, they’ve found ways to earn positive results against very different teams in 2026, utilizing different aspects of the team to get the job done. Against Portland, for example, MNUFC found themselves with more time and space on the ball, allowing their creative players (Tomás Chancalay, Joaquín Pereyra, and Kelvin Yeboah) to link up extremely well to produce fluid, threatening passages of play. Against a far more smothering Dallas press, the Loons refused to resort to long balls over the top, instead keeping approximately 60% possession in the first half and methodically breaking through the pressure. This gradually opened enough space for them to get forward with numbers, and the overload created by the wingbacks made the difference for the game-winner. Whether a team is sitting back or pressing up, this Loons side has proven that they’ve got ways to get around it, making this game more likely to be a high-scoring shootout than a nil-nil draw.
