NIKO HANSEN: 10 things you don’t know about me

1. I couldn’t go a day without …

“Definitely a nice coffee. I feel like that’s the answer for everybody, right? I have to have a nice coffee every day. I always go with an iced latte with oat milk. That’s my go-to.”

2. The best piece of life advice I have ever received is …

“That’s a tough one. I think when you think about life quotes, it’s also what time of your life you’re in. So different things resonate. One that popped in my mind was ‘Pay it forward.’ But, I think, right now, one of the big ones is a good one about opportunity. It’s: ‘Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.’ And how you aren’t just lucky, you prepare your entire life for a moment, and when that moment comes, if you’re not prepared for it, you won’t actually make it. So I think that’s a big one. Just manifesting and being aware that you are going to get your opportunity, so don’t wait for it to come, prepare for it to come.”

3. Something that can instantly make my day better is …

“Just kindness. Just random acts of kindness. I think that coincides with ‘Pay it forward.’ You never know what people are going through, so a random act of kindness can mean a lot to someone.”

4. A song that always gets me on the dance floor is …

“See, I’m a big-time dancer, so it doesn’t really take a lot for me. Let’s just do the first one that popped in my head, I don’t know why, but it would get me on the dance floor for sure. It’s Nelly’s ‘Hot in Here.’ For sure!”

5. My favorite way to spend an off day is …

“I like to go for a long walk. Like, five, six miles. Just go for a nice, long walk. Something nature typically, not just out and about. Me and my fiancée, we have our little dog, too, so, we like to go for long walks. That’s typically what a day off is. It’s just such a nice way to get away from your phone. You just have conversation, too, when you’re on a walk. You don’t even know what you talked about for the last hour and a half, but you’ve just been talking for the entire time.”

6. The significance to my number is …

“This is the first year I’m going to be wearing it, so I’m excited. It was actually the 2002 World Cup, I’m almost positive Ronaldinho was wearing the number 11 that year. I was 8 at the time, watching. I just watched him. The fun that he had. The joy that he played with. The passion that he had. So, that’s why number 11 is important to me.”

7. My favorite family tradition is …

“See, I have two different cultures now, so it’s tough for me to say because I’m from Denmark originally. I think just getting together with family. Having big get-togethers. Whether it’s on my American side, like Thanksgiving. Christmas is celebrated the same, I would say. But, just getting together, eating food, hanging out, playing games. Things like that. Just having conversation amongst family. I think that’s my favorite family tradition. Just the time I get to spend with family all together is awesome.”

8. Something I always have with me when I travel is …

“Snacks! I gotta have some sort of food or snack. I do love Fig Bars, those are big for me right now. I love Fig Bars, Lara Bars. Some sort of chocolate is always good, too. I have a bunch of stuff that I brought. I actually saw these at CostCo, they’re honey roasted macadamia nuts. They are unbelievable. They are so good.”

9. Something that’s on my bucket list is …

“Most of mine are nature-y things. So, for example, I’ve always wanted to go… there’s this beautiful place in Arizona. It’s called Havasupai [Indian Reservation.] There are these beautiful, blue falls and you can only get there by — I think — it’s a 10-mile hike. You have to park and then you have to hike to get to the spot. I think you have to pay for it if you want to get helicoptered up or even driven up. It’s very remote. That’s for sure one on my bucket list, at least in the states. In other places, there are tons of other places in the world. I want to see the Seven Wonders, do something like that.”

10. I’m proud of myself because …

“Actually, I was thinking about it when I signed for Minnesota. I was honestly like, let me take a step back, and I’ve actually played for four years in the league. If I were not to get a new contract in the league or whatever, or, at the time I was kind of in-between, I would be proud of how much I’ve played and how far I’ve gotten so far. Not a lot of people can say that. So, it was kind of a moment of gratitude and I’m grateful for the opportunities that I’ve gotten and am proud of what I’ve done so far.”
