Allianz Field has played host to many-a-game since opening in 2019, but none of them have been quite like that. The Loons and the Lions put on one of the most memorable performances in both clubs’ histories tonight, fighting their way to a dramatic 3-3 draw that saw five goals scored in the second half alone. It was a match that ran the stadium and the players through the full range of emotions, and a reminder of why we call this the beautiful game — despite ending with split spoils. 

The Black and Blue rolled out the same lineup that took down San Jose 5-1 last time out, building on what was undoubtedly their most complete showing of the year. They flexed their attacking muscles early, finding a few half-chances to establish their threat in the final third and showcasing a newfound confidence. Both teams were playing with a technical proficiency that made the opponent wary of leaving open space, making the opening stage of the match very much a chess match of movement and execution. 

The measured tactical battle got blown open in the 28th minute, though, when Orlando striker Daryl Dike put the visitors up 1-0 during a chaotic sequence in the Loons’ box. The hosts found a few moments of quality before the whistle blew for halftime — including a Joaquín Pereyra rabona cross at the very end — but the scoring would have to wait. 

The second half started on a bitter note, as MNUFC goalkeeper Drake Callender was forced to sub out of the match due to an injury sustained during the first goal. The Loons responded well after losing their starting keeper, though, creating chances from the get-go. Some creative interplay was thwarted by narrowly missed connections, as the Loons seemingly tried to create the perfect chance, rather than having a hit and testing the keeper. Orlando took advantage of this hesitancy, doubling the lead with a clinical counter in the 64th minute. Antoine Griezmann’s fingerprints were all over the goal, and the vibes were on the decline. 

But that didn’t last long.

From the brink of succumbing to tired legs, the Loons found a second gear in the 71st minute, when an incredible full-field switch from Pereyra found Kyle Duncan wide open on the right side of the box. Duncan’s cross to the top of the six was met by Kelvin Yeboah, whose strike was subsequently turned in by the outstretched leg of Marcus Caldeira, who scored his second goal in as many games to keep his form on an impressive trajectory. 

Caldeira was rewarded with a substitution, as Mauricio González entered the match immediately after the goal and Nectarios Triantis replaced Wil Trapp with the Loons seeking another goal. They didn’t wait long, and it was a familiar connection that made the difference. 

Just three minutes after Caldeira’s strike, a Pereyra corner found the head of Anthony Markanich for a 74th-minute equalizer, sending Allianz Field into a full-throated eruption and swinging the match firmly in MNUFC’s favor. The boys were buzzing, and they weren’t done yet. Two minutes later, the Loons took their first lead of the match, and it was glorious. 

Kyle Duncan found himself one-on-one with Orlando keeper Maxime Crépeau, only for his shot to deflect into the middle of the box. Yeboah was waiting, luckily enough, and he evidently rode his bike to the game. His overhead kick in the 76th minute sent the stadium into hysterics, completing the comeback and lighting a fire under an already motivated home side. 

The Loons kept pushing after the go-ahead strike, and looked like they would find another when Tomás Chancalay subbed on. Space opened up for both teams to play into, and Orlando proved to be opportunistic one final time, grabbing a late equalizer in the 90+3rd minute, ending the game on an anticlimactic note. 

The hosts posted an impressive 20 shots before the final whistle, blowing away Orlando’s six shots. But, on a night that saw the Loons cash in on their expected goals tally, an extremely clinical Orlando side kept this from becoming one of the most famous results in Allianz Field history. Solid performances from Marcus Caldeira, Kyle Duncan, and Owen Gene set the tone for a nonetheless memorable matchday, and a 10th assist of the season for Joaquín Pereyra was a perfect exclamation point for yet another masterclass in the midfield from MNUFC’s number 26.

The Black and Blue will look to keep their scoring streak going in Portland next weekend, when they take on the Timbers on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. CT, with streaming available on Apple TV.
