After a nearly two-hour weather delay, MNUFC2 and Tacoma Defiance battled to a 1-1 draw at the National Sports Center Stadium on Friday night, with both sides trading goals on either side of halftime before the Twos prevailed in the penalty shootout to claim the extra point. Minnesota now turns its attention to a quick turnaround on the road, facing Real Monarchs on Sunday, August 24.
5’ - After a giveaway in the midfield by MNUFC2’s Curt Calov, Tacoma Defiance’s Charles Dodzi Christian went at the MNUFC2 backline and slipped a ball out to the left flank to Sebastian Gomez. Gomez was able to get the match's first shot away but missed the target.
7’ - Goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich recorded his first crucial block of the night when Jackson Anthony Khoury made a run down the right flank and delivered a short pass to Edson Carli in the center of the attacking third. After some bouncing around in the penalty area, Carli took a shot, but Rizvanovich blocked it with his chest to keep the score level.
14’ - MNUFC2’s Kieran Chandler was able to take the ball off Cody Baker in Tacoma Defiance’s defensive third of the field and drive at Tacoma’s backline. After a lack of initial pressure from Tacoma, Chandler clipped a ball to the back post that went untouched by MNUFC2’s Luke Hille and rolled over the end line for a Tacoma Defiance goal kick.
24’ - MNUFC2 continued to threaten in the half, this time with Niang taking control of the ball near the top of the 18-yard box and unleashing a strike that forced Castro to tip it over the bar, resulting in a corner kick for the Twos.
39’ - Tacoma came knocking on MNUFC2’s door once again when Tacoma’s Gomez snuck by MNUFC2’s Justin Sosnouski and drove a ball across the six yard box to Yu Tsukanome. After a quick turn from Tsukanome, he struck a shot just wide of MNUFC2’s goal.
44’ (1-0) - Logan Dorsey opened the scoring for MNUFC2 after Darius Randell carried the ball down the right flank and delivered a long cross into the box, where Dorsey headed it into the back of the net.
52’ (1-1) - Tacoma Defiance equalized in the opening minutes of the second half after Sebastian Gomez received the ball at midfield on the half turn and split the MNUFC2 backline with a quick through ball to Omar Hassan. Hassan then went at MNUFC2’s Kayne Rizvanovich and was able to dribble past the goalkeeper and slot the ball into the back of the net.
59’ - MNUFC2 continued to put the pressure on Tacoma as MNUFC2’s Momoh Kamara picked up the ball at half field and drove directly at the backline of Tacoma. After carrying the ball past multiple defenders, the attack resulted in a shot just off target to the left of Jacob Castro’s goal.
75’ - Curt Calov sent in a long ball from the right flank, but it was quickly cleared by a Tacoma defender. The rebound fell to Momoh Kamara, who struck a first-time volley from outside the penalty area. His effort rattled the crossbar and bounced back into play.
89’ - MNUFC2’s Kamara kept the pressure on Tacoma in the final stages of the game as he made an opening at the top of the box and then played the ball out to the left flank to Babacar Niang. Niang’s shot went on to be deflected by a Tacoma Defiance defender out for a MNUFC2 corner.
