Markanich Strikes Again as Loons Extend Unbeaten Streak to Six

Anthony Markanich Goal vs. Dallas

Yeehaw, you Loons: That’s how you get it done! Minnesota United took down FC Dallas tonight by a tight 1-0 scoreline, ending Dallas’ five-game unbeaten run and extending their own streak to six matches in a row without a loss. In an all-around composed performance, the Loons looked to be in control from start to finish, adapting well to whatever the hosts threw at them across 90 minutes that showcased a variety of approaches.

Head Coach Cameron Knowles stuck with the hot hands tonight, starting the exact same eleven for the fourth league game in a row. Straight away, though, it was clear that this Dallas side was unlike any of the teams they’d played in their previous five matches, as their relentless pressure and direct approach with the ball put the Black and Blue up against it in the opening 20 minutes.

That aggressive approach from the hosts lent itself to some long balls over the top from the visitors, and though the visiting Loons took advantage of that space in behind on several occasions, they opted to play through the press more often than not. After showing their ability to play through the middle, Dallas’ press lost some of its bite, and the Loons’ calmness allowed them to not only control the tempo but get the better of the chances in the latter stages of the opening half.

After the 20-minute mark, MNUFC began stretching the field with some beautiful combination play and full-field switches, courtesy of Tomás Chancalay. This led to even more fluid ball movement, scrambling Dallas and setting the stage for the breakthrough.

With numbers in the attacking third, the Loons continued to pass the ball well, eventually finding midfielder Owen Gene on the end line, much like Jefferson Diaz against Portland. Gene held the ball, scanned the box, and nutmegged his defender to find the run of Anthony Markanich, who followed his initial shot to put away the rebound and take the lead. Once again, Markanich proved that he always knows where to be.

From there, the pace of the match slowed down, as the Loons were a bit more content to force Dallas to break them down. They remained dangerous and active, but against a Dallas side that was clearly deflated and tired, it felt like a matter of keeping composure would see out the result, rather than grabbing a few more goals.

Dallas Head Coach Eric Quill clearly changed the approach at the half, and as one would expect, the home side was more careful with the ball at their feet in the second half. Where the Loons had been dominating possession, Los Toros now attempted to put together passing sequences of their own, only to find limited success as the Loons got numbers behind the ball. The 70th-minute injury to Petar Musa took a bit more wind out of Dallas’ sails, and though the hosts managed to create a few more opportunities before the final whistle, they couldn’t find anything to beat Drake Callender, who secured yet another clean sheet in his 100th MLS regular season start.

While the combination of Chancalay, Joaquín Pereyra, and Kelvin Yeboah weren’t able to find the same fluidity that impressed the crowd against Portland, the Loons’ creative engines found ways to remain effective against a very different opponent. Both Chancalay and Pereyra dropped deep to get numbers in front of them, while Yeboah ran the channels to move the Dallas defense and make room for his teammates. From there, it was the attacking intent of Kyle Duncan and Markanich that created the overloads that the visitors needed to get ahead, and it worked perfectly.

In addition to the wingbacks, MNUFC’s three center backs were outstanding today, with Jefferson Diaz stepping up often during that initial, intense press from Dallas. This group has been growing stronger every time they take the pitch, and after earning the club’s fourth clean sheet in league play, they’re shaping up to be one of the most effective units in all of MLS.

With this win, your Loons have amassed 17 points from their opening nine games of 2026. At the time of writing, they’re just four points behind conference leaders Vancouver, firmly in the mix in what has proven to be a very strong Western Conference. Now, attention turns to this weekend’s matchup with LAFC, who have taken a bit of a step back after starting the year in blistering form. Tune into Apple TV or FOX this Saturday at 3:45 p.m. CT to catch this star-studded showdown and see if the Black and Blue can keep charging their way up the table.
