It’s been a long journey back to Minnesota for midfielder Aziel Jackson, but what a return it’s been. After joining the team mid-season and working to get his feet under him, the former MNUFC2 standout has shown flashes of the immense promise that made Loons fans notice him to begin with, culminating in a spot on Team of the Matchday 31. His spot on the bench was earned by sparking the Black and Blue’s comeback victory to snap St. Louis’ 21-game unbeaten streak, with Jackson’s 49th-minute strike the beginning of the table-turning performance at Allianz Field.
Though he’s earned just 185 minutes of regular-season action for the Loons, Jackson’s impact has been tangible in each of his appearances. In his two starts, he’s showcased his workrate, versatility, and natural quality on the ball. His knack for being in the right place at the right time — or getting there very quickly if not — makes him a constant threat for opposing defenses, as showcased by his finish against St. Louis. His work in the build-up enables his fellow attacking players to make penetrating runs while he draws the attention of defenders, opening the field to a number of exciting possibilities when the ball is at his feet.
This weekend’s goal was AZ’s first of the season, but considering his and the team’s goal scoring form, it’s unlikely to be his last. Your Loons will be back in action this weekend against Houston, and with just four games remaining in the regular season, it’s a match with great importance in the hunt for postseason soccer. Here’s to hoping that Jackson can keep his impressive form rolling another week!
