SAM GLEADLE: 10 things you don’t know about me

1. Something I couldn’t go a day without …

“It’s probably a cup of tea. Just normal black English tea with some milk in it. No sugar. I definitely have more than one per day.”

2. I’m proud of myself because …

“The one that jumps out at me, is coming from England, I’ve never had a family member who has graduated from college or has done the four-year college thing, so I was the first in my family to do that. I ended up getting two degrees in three and a half years while playing soccer. And, obviously I got to play professionally after as well. So, I’m pretty proud of myself for that. And I have a little brother who is on his way as well.”

3. My favorite family tradition is …

“When I was living at home with mom and dad, we had roast dinner every Sunday. Just a nice big meal. Then, Boxing Day, that’s really my Christmas Day. That’s when the big family gets together, and I have a pretty big family in England, so we all get together and we just have a massive meal.”

4. Something on my bucket list is …

“For me, I would like to go see either the Champions League final or the World Cup final. In person. Wherever that is. One of the two. Or play in that.”

5. My daily ritual is …

“If it’s football related, I have something I’m going to do. But, if not, it’s usually what am I going to be eating next?”

6. My biggest hero(s) are …

“I’d say both of my parents. We moved here when I was younger and, just their ability to adapt and make us feel comfortable and start a whole new life here away from their parents, our cousins, everything. And just their desire to provide for myself and my brother. Showing us how to love, how to have good relationships and how to work hard for everything we have. So they would be my heroes.”

7. My go-to music I listen to when I’m driving is …

“It’s hip-hop. Russ is my favorite artist at the moment. He’s a smaller, up-and-coming guy. But, anything, really. Anything besides country and hard rock. I can’t do those two.”

8. My biggest fear is …

“Losing someone that I love dearly. Whether that’s family, friends and it’s been x amount of times since I’ve spoken to them or told them how I feel about them and the experiences that we’ve shared. I think, for me, it just makes me stay in contact with people. Past. Present. And just have conversations with them, see how they’re doing, check in. So the fear of losing someone.”

9. The significance behind my number is …

“I’ve been 23 for a very long time, so it is my number. But I don’t have a real personal reason behind it. I grew up watching Thierry Henry, so I always wanted 14, but no matter what team I went to, somebody already had it.”

10. The best piece of life advice I have received is …

“It’s for sports, the first thing that jumps out at me, coaches told me, you could go against the person you’re battling on the field. They could stop you eight, nine times, it doesn’t matter. That one time you beat them. However many times it is, you have to do it every time and the one time I win that battle, something positive could come from it and we could end up winning the game. So don’t be discouraged. Stay confident. And win your battle.”
