Alec Smir

Goalkeeper Alec Smir was signed to MNUFC2 ahead of the club’s inaugural season in MLS NEXT Pro in 2022. Ahead of the 2023 campaign, Smir was sent out on loan to USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks. He was recalled from that loan in May. The keeper then made four game appearances in net (all starts) in 2023, where he recorded 16 saves and notably earned three-straight clean sheets from June 18 through July 2. During his first season with the Twos, Smir made eight appearances (all starts), earning three wins and one shutout. The North Carolina native notably was selected to participate in the 2022 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge in the return of “Goalie Wars”, defeating two other MLS NEXT Pro goalkeepers to win the surprise event in front of the home crowd at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Prior to joining MNUFC2, he was selected 62nd overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas. Collegiately, Smir played for the University of North Carolina where he started all 18 of the Tarheel games in 2020, leading the ACC in shutouts, played all minutes during the NCAA College Cup and was named Second-Team All-South Region. Smir left UNC with a record of 21 wins, eight losses, and six draws.
