What to Watch For: MNUFC vs. FC Dallas

Minnesota United is riding high after its first win of the season, and will hope to carry that momentum on the road when it heads south to take on FC Dallas. Dallas hasn’t played an MLS match in two weeks, but are still one of the top teams in the league. Fresh off a CONCACAF Champions League semifinal series against Pachuca, the team will be ready to welcome a hungry Minnesota squad to Frisco.

Here are a few things to keep your eye on during the match Saturday night.

Youths!

Over the past several seasons, FC Dallas has been quietly building one of the strongest rosters in MLS, built around a bunch of youngsters. Dallas has by far the youngest squad in the league with an average age of 24.3 years old. It has six players on its roster younger than 20, including 15-year-old forward Bryan Reynolds. While it has a handful of more experienced players to balance the squad, Head Coach Oscar Pareja tends to rely more on his younger guys.

What makes this team more exciting is that much of its young talent is locally produced. Nine of its 28 players have Homegrown Player status, putting Big D near the top of the list for soccer hotspots in the U.S.

This young team won the Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup last year and was favored to win MLS Cup, but was knocked off in the Conference Semifinals by eventual champions Seattle Sounders. They are looking to set the record straight this year, and have charged out of the gate to an undefeated start. Whether they will be able to keep the run going after the break will be put to the test on Saturday.

New Kids on the Block

Last Friday, the Loons made a few moves that brought Sam Cronin and Marc Burch to Minnesota. The trade came on the heels of a string of tough results to open the season, and Head Coach Adrian Heath was looking to make a change to right the ship. Neither featured in the club’s 4-2 win over Real Salt Lake this weekend, but the match brought up some questions in the squad including where Cronin and Burch fit into the rotation.

Both players are MLS veterans and bring a ton of experience to a team full of newcomers to the league. Many teams have found out that MLS is a different beast, and filling a roster with guys who have been in the league can ease the growing pains. Cronin and Burch were important parts of the Rapids roster and look to be stepping into the Loons lineup right away. However, after a strong result from his regular starters, it remains to be seen if Heath will want to shuffle his troops around right away.

Disciplined Loons

One thing that that has stood out in the numbers for Minnesota in its first five matches is the disparity in its fouls-conceded to fouls-suffered ratio. The Loons are the second most fouled team in the league with 64. When averaged out to a per match basis, they fall somewhere in the middle of the pack with 12.8 fouls suffered per match. So they aren’t really drawing as many fouls as it appears, but they are conceding fewer fouls than almost every other team.

Currently the Loons have the second lowest fouls per game in MLS with 9.4, sitting just above LA Galaxy who are at 9.0. Now, committing fewer fouls doesn’t necessarily correlate with wins, but when you look at the five teams with the fewest fouls in 2016, four of them made the playoffs, including both MLS Cup finalists. So while giving up fewer fouls may not be beneficial initially, in the long run it could be extremely helpful for the Loons — especially when it comes to eliminating set piece chances.

Minnesota will have to keep a disciplined defense against a Dallas team that can punish any mistakes in an instant. Limiting chances, especially free kick opportunities, will give the Loons their best chance to claim some more points on Saturday.
