Mortenson Construction Selected to Build St. Paul Stadium

Minnesota United FC has selected Mortenson Construction, a leading builder of sports facilities in the U.S., as the construction manager for the team’s planned $120 million, 20,000-seat stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. The stadium will be the home for Major League Soccer (MLS) in the state of Minnesota.

Construction on the stadium is planned to begin in 2016. It will be located between Minneapolis and St. Paul, at the intersection of Snelling and University avenues, in the Midway area of St. Paul with adjacent access to multiple transit options including the METRO Green Line and Interstate 94. Design of the stadium will be led by Kansas City-based Populous, a world-renowned sports architecture and design firm. Mortenson and Populous have partnered on numerous sports facility projects over the years, including Target Field, TCF Bank Stadium, and Xcel Energy Center. The companies are currently working together on SunTrust Park for the Atlanta Braves and Colorado State University Stadium.

"We are very pleased and fortunate to have Mortenson Construction as our partner as we build a new, world-class soccer stadium and begin a larger re-development of Midway area," said William W. McGuire, M.D., who represents the group of local families who have joined together to bring Major League Soccer to Minnesota. "Mortenson is a Minnesota company that is internationally recognized as builders of great sports facilities. That experience - coupled with their ongoing focus on innovation, technology and quality - will benefit our team and fans, the sport of soccer, the neighborhoods around the new facility, and our entire state."

“Mortenson is honored to be selected by Minnesota United FC to build this world-class stadium in our community for the world’s biggest sport,” said Ken Sorensen, senior vice president at Mortenson. “We look forward to partnering with Minnesota United FC, the City of St. Paul, Populous, and the exceptionally talented men and women in the local construction trades to deliver this tremendous project.”

Mortenson is ranked by Engineering News-Record as one of the top sports builders in the U.S. with notable professional sports facilities currently under construction: SunTrust Park, (home of the MLB Atlanta Braves), and U.S. Bank Stadium (home of the NFL Minnesota Vikings). Mortenson also recently completed the renovation of Amalie Arena (home of the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning).
