It all comes down to this. MNUFC2 enter their final match of the MLS NEXT Pro regular season with a postseason berth on the line, with their fate set to be decided in the friendly confines of the National Sports Center Stadium. Their opponents? LAFC 2, a side just three points ahead of them in the league standings and already guaranteed a playoff spot. With a six-game unbeaten run behind them that’s seen the Twos outscore their opponents 11-3, Head Coach Fanendo Adi and his squad will be coming into this one with confidence, motivation, and something to prove.
That confidence has come largely behind the incredible form of Homegrown forward Darius Randell, whose five goals in his last four games earned him consecutive MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Matchweek honors for Matchweek’s 27 and 28. While he didn’t find the net in his side’s draw and subsequent shootout victory over Real Monarchs on Wednesday, he only played about 16 minutes, giving him rested legs ahead of this weekend’s do-or-die showdown.
As it stands, your Twos could keep their season alive with just one of the following things happening on this final weekend of regular-season action: MNUFC2 earns at least one point against LAFC2, North Texas gets two or fewer points, Tacoma gets two or fewer points, or San Jose gets two or fewer points. Any of those results would guarantee the Black and Blue would finish at least ninth in the Western Conference.
On the other side of the coin, the boys could rise as high as fifth if results go their way. This wouldn’t change much in the way of playoff selection, as the top four in the conference get to pick their first-round opponents, but it would enable them to skip the newly added play-in match between the eighth and ninth place finishers.
For LAFC2, the floor is seventh place and the ceiling is fifth. The result of this weekend’s match will have almost no effect on their postseason from a statistics standpoint, but it could very well have a massive effect from a psychological standpoint. Either they’ll have to decide between resting some tired legs ahead of their already-confirmed postseason berth, or looking to keep momentum alive after their 5-1 win over SKC II last weekend. That said, the playoffs won’t start until early October, meaning LAFC2 won’t have to worry about playing again until October 16 at the earliest. With plenty of difference makers across the pitch and a 1-0 win over MNUFC2 already under their belts from back in late June, the Black and Gold could very well make this a competitive finale if they choose to.
As is typical in a league of this nature, MNUFC2 has seen a wide variety of players don the colors in 2026, finding contributors from every possible avenue. With 14 different goal scorers this season, your Twos utilized appearances from first teamers (DJ Taylor, Julian Gressel, Kieran Chandler, among others) and Academy standouts (Anderson Ferris, Max Harwood, Hector Cruz, among others) to supplement a talented second-team roster, culminating in exactly the kind of season you want to see at this level. From development for young players to sharpness for veterans, the Twos have managed to not only bridge the gap in the player pathway this season but also find a way to compete at the same time. After all of that, it’s hard to say they don’t deserve to keep going a little longer.
