MNUFC2 earned a commanding 5-1 victory over Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday night, powered by Darius Randell’s first career hat trick with MNUFC2. Hector Cruz scored his first MLS NEXT Pro goal, while Jordan Adebayo-Smith added the fifth and final goal in second-half stoppage time to secure all three points for Minnesota. MNUFC2 returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16, traveling to face Real Monarchs at 6:00 p.m. CT.
5’ (1-0) - MNUFC2 opened the scoring early in the first half through Darius Randell following a counterattack that began in Minnesota’s defensive third. Defender Alpha Kabia gained possession just outside the Loons’ 18-yard box before sending a through ball down the middle to Hector Cruz, who played a give-and-go with Randell down the left flank. Upon receiving the pass back Randell carried and pushed the ball over the line to open the score.
17’ (2-0) - MNUFC2 doubled its lead in the 17th minute through Cruz following a Minnesota free kick near midfield. The service connected with Nick Dang inside the 18-yard box, where he played the ball out wide to Jakob Friedman on the right flank. Friedman then found Luciano Pechota making a run into the Whitecaps 2 penalty area. Pechota sent a low cross into the six-yard box, where Cruz pushed the ball into the back of the net.
19’ (3-0) - Shortly after Randell scored his brace following an attempt by Phillip Tarnue that was cleared away but the clearance landed to Randell inside the 18-yard box. Randell took a few touches and took a turn to bury his second of the night.
27’ (4-0) - MNUFC2 earned a free kick in the right attacking third, where Friedman stepped up to take the kick. He played it short to Cruz on the right flank, who quickly returned the ball to Friedman. Friedman then delivered a cross into the Whitecaps 2 penalty area that goalkeeper Sam Rogers initially saved, but the rebound fell to Randell, who tapped it over the line to complete his hat trick early in the first half.
32’ - Vancouver created their first dangerous opportunity following a corner kick taken by Cristiano Bruletti. His service connected with Trevor Wright, whose attempt struck the crossbar. The rebound then fell to Immanuel Mathe, but his follow-up effort sailed over the crossbar.
37’ - Dang played a long switch to Randell on the left flank. Randell then carried the ball into the 18-yard box before firing an attempt that Rogers saved with his body, sending the ball out for an MNUFC2 corner kick.
45’ + 3’ - Following a corner kick from the left side taken by Cruz, the service connected with forward Mamadou Dieng, who redirected the ball toward goal. Rogers made the save, sending the attempt out for another MNUFC2 corner kick.
50’ - Following a throw in from Dang, Cruz settled the ball with his chest for Dieng. Dieng hit the ball on a first-touch, forcing Rogers to dive right and get a touch on the ball to send it out for a corner for Minnesota.
56’ (4-1) - Whitecaps 2 scored their first goal of the night after Carson Rassak delivered a long cross from the left flank into the six-yard box. Tyler Brown met the service with a header, directing his attempt into the back of the net.
73’ - Jordan Adebayo-Smith stole possession in the middle third before playing a short pass to Luke Hille. Hille took a few touches before switching the field to Dieng, who carried the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and fired an attempt that was blocked by defender Valter Sedin. The rebound fell to Hille, who followed up with a shot that sailed over the crossbar.
90’ + 1’ (5-1) - Adebayo-Smith scored MNUFC2’s fifth and final goal of the night after Kabia cleared a Whitecaps 2 throw-in. Adebayo-Smith gained possession in the middle third and carried the ball into the 18-yard box, where he found himself one-on-one with Rogers.
