MNUFC2 wasn’t able to contain a potent offensive performance from St. Louis CITY2, falling by a 4-0 score at Energizer Park on Sunday evening. The Twos return home to Minnesota next weekend, hosting Houston Dynamo 2 on August 2.
14’ (0-1) - St. Louis CITY2 opened the scoring off a Brendan McSorley one-touch shot that found the back of the net off of a corner kick service by teammate Miguel Perez. McScorley connected with the inbound ball and quickly hit his strike to give the home side the early lead.
24’ (0-2) - Perez doubled the lead for CITY2. A few moments before the goal, MNUFC2 defender Britton Fischer attempted to intercept a ball forward, but missed the stop. Emil Jaaskelainen quickly gained possession and turned towards goal, passing it off to Perez who was deep into the Minnesota box before finishing the scoring chance.
45’ - Off a goal kick, the Twos drove the ball into the St. Louis defending third. Defender Kieran Chandler took the ball into the opposing half before sending a ball into the box. Forward Loïc Mesanvi received the ball and made a quick run at goal, but his run was ultimately stopped by the CITY2 defense.
52’ (0-3) - The home side scored a third goal on the evening off a direct free-kick service into the MNUFC2 box. Perez sent the set piece into the 18-yard box, where the Twos back line made an attempt to head the service back out. But the ball landed in front of Cameron Cilley, whose close-range shot landed in the back of the net.
54’ - Just minutes later, the Twos created a dangerous scoring chance. Midfielder Babacar Niang drove deep into St. Louis’ penalty area, conceding a clean tackle. But, the ball was quickly recovered by forward Luke Hille, who took a strike that was ultimately saved by goalkeeper Colin Welsh.
55’ - Niang got another quick chance at scoring when he gained possession at the corner of the box, about 25 yards out from goal. The midfielder quickly turned and fired off a long-distance shot. His shot curled toward the far upper corner of the goal, but Welsh made the leaping save.
71’ (0-4) - CITY2 scored a fourth goal when Caden Glover broke past the MNUFC2 back line, running with space and ultimately beating goalkeeper Alec Smir on the shot.
